Best of the web: finding people to talk to

A round-up of some great resources for parents who need support or advice on delicate subject matters, from schooling to family problems.

Best of the web: finding people to talk to

There's a lot to talk about as a parent, topics like school or health, but there isn't always someone there to listen. This week we have compiled some links and suggestions on advice and support. We have links for blogging anonymously, links just for dads and sites for single parents. Do you have a great website for advice and support? Or just a site that has helped you when you needed someone to talk to? Please share your links in the comments.

A selection of advice and support links

A lot of you parents out there are avid bloggers. Blogging is a great way to speak your mind and discuss difficult problems in your life with other parents. There are tons of parents out there talking about important things, not just going on in their lives but in the country (and the world). This week PantsWithNames and TrulyUglyFeet made some interesting conversation about vaccines. What have you been blogging about lately?

Sometimes blogging can seem very personal but on a public platform, this can seem intimidating for a lot of people. An anonymous blogging site (Blognonymous) has been developed, making embarrassing or private matters easier to discuss with other parents. Confide in others by asking important questions that may otherwise be difficult to discuss. One anonymous blogger asks for advice on her elderly parents-in-law driving her children around. The blogger fears that as her parents-in-law are older, suffering from poor hearing and deteriorating health, they may be a risk to the children’s health as they drive them around. Do you have any advice for this blog? Or do you have a problem you want to discuss anonymously?

There is a lot of help and advice for mums out there, but what about dads? Netmums has a great forum where dads can chat about kids, hobbies and life in general. The forum is full of advice and support and there are tons of helpful tips on being a dad. They also have a great advice and support centre for all parents seeking support or advice on genuine problems or sensitive situations.

There is some great advice from new website www.parentchannel.tv a website for parents of 5-19 year olds, designed to support and encourage parents by addressing their day to day questions and concerns through a collection of short videos.

One Space offers an online community for single parents with support from experienced parenting facilitators. The site brings together essential information and links to helpful resource points. The online groups also act as a support group, where people can gain information and support from other single parents who have been through similar experiences - a lifeline to many who unexpectedly find themselves to be single parents.

The Parent Connection offers a wide variety of helpful information on going through a tough time in relationships with lots of other parents views on what they are (or have been) going through. The website also offers a lot of resources, articles, self-assessment tools, activities and exercises.

A recent post on Got Your Hands Full aired mums' experiences of mental health. These were collected through the supportive blog, Speaking up, Breaking the Silence. Too often, this may be an area of health that isn't discussed.

What do you think of these links and discussions? Do you have any links to offer, or any sites with helpful advice for parents? Please share your own links in the comments below, and please feel free to share links to posts on your own blogs, or other blogs you like.

Excellent recommendations. For parents concerned about their child's behaviour I would add the following mental health organisations which offer advice and fact sheets. Many have confidential help lines too:

    Beat: http://www.b-eat.co.uk/
    Royal College of Psychiatrists: http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/
    Young Minds: http://www.youngminds.org.uk/
    Mind: http://www.mind.org.uk/

Thank you so much for including us (Blognonymous). This is the best part of the blogging community for me - using our compassion and experiences to help others. Really useful post, thanks x
