Craft video tutorial: How to make a memory jar

This is a beautiful way to display treasured mementos, and it's also a personal, affordable Christmas present kids can make themselves.

Craft video tutorial: How to make a memory jar

Editor's note: Is it just us, or is Christmas getting more expensive? In a move to drive down costs and focus on the important stuff (family! memories! connections!), we're updating some of our favourite craft ideas. Home-made gifts cost less, but as the years go by, they mean more and more...

By the end of the year, your kids have probably gathered enough holiday souvenirs, favourite leaves, special rocks and digital photos to fill their own wing of a museum. Knowing what to do with these momentos can be tricky, but fear not – you're more than halfway to a memory jar. Just grab a jam jar and get creative to make a simple, fun display that's a perfect gift for grandparents, parents and friends.

You'll need:

  • A clean jam jar with a lid
  • Momentos
  • Ribbon and embellisments
  • Glue or double sided sticky tape
  • A tag

Happy crafting!

Love this idea. My 6 year old son is a bit of a womble so will try this out with his various 'collections' he has accumulated.

What a lovely idea. I shall definitely be doing this when we come back from our summer holidays this year and I'm going to do one from our wonderful week away in Weymouth earlier this year. I wondered what to do with those shells! A great way to save your memories. Thanks for sharing another fab idea Debbie.

What a fantastic idea Debbie! My eldest son, B, loves little trinket-y bits - the smaller the better most of the time! We have a massive collection from our holiday: shells like Kim.. mini toys from vending machines (a treat he's only allowed on holiday!).. foreign coins, stickers and the resort's business cards! All I need to do now is choose the right photo and the right size jam jar! I could even do it with B as a Christmas present from him to his little brother, S. Saving the £s!!

    Thanks Debbie!
